Welcome to Freedom Fotos, a photography project dedicated to creating materials that capture attention, provoke discussion, and motivate us as a nation to review the justice system in our communities and nation-wide.
In March 2023 the Prison Policy Initiative reported that there are roughly 1.9 million people incarcerated in the United States, 803,000 on parole, and 2.9 million on probation. That means that not only are there a huge number of people in prison; there are even more people who are now free.
So if there are so many people now free, who are they? Are these people the invisibles? Are you invisible? Are you part of this secret society? And why should this be so secret anyway?
Let’s open the windows, open the doors, open the eyes of the world and say, “I am here and I am free and I am proud and I am real and complicated and mostly just like everyone else.
